Pune’s Vehicle Rush Hits 39 Lakh Mark While EV Sales Drop Sharply

Pune is choking with traffic—and the numbers prove it.

The city is seeing a major traffic jam problem as more and more people buy new vehicles, but roads are not getting any wider. In the financial year 2024-25, Pune saw over 3.07 lakh new vehicles registered, pushing the total number of vehicles in the city past a massive 39 lakh!

But here’s something unexpected—electric vehicle (EV) sales have dropped this year. While Pune registered 32,000 EVs in 2023-24, the number fell to just 13,689 in 2024-25. That’s a big drop for a city that once led in EV adoption.

Gudi Padwa Rush: 10,000+ New Vehicles in Just One Week!

The festive spirit added to the vehicle boom. During the week of Gudi Padwa (March 20–28), the Pune RTO saw a 39% jump in new vehicle registrations compared to the same time last year.

Here’s what people bought this year:

  • 6,510 motorcycles
  • 2,424 cars
  • 283 auto-rickshaws
  • 517 goods carriers
  • 234 tourist taxis
  • 68 buses
  • 134 other vehicles

Last year during Gudi Padwa week, only 7,336 vehicles were registered. This year? A whopping 10,170!

Why This Matters

More vehicles and fewer EVs could mean more pollution, more fuel use, and longer traffic jams. Experts say Pune needs better public transport and road planning to manage the pressure.

Unless there’s a major change, the city could face heavier traffic and increased pollution in the near future.

So while Pune celebrates its love for new wheels, it might also be time to hit the brakes and think about sustainable transport solutions.
