BYD, the world’s biggest electric vehicle (EV) maker, is planning to build its first factory in India, and Telangana is likely to be the chosen state. If this happens, Hyderabad will become home to one of the largest EV production units in the country.
BYD’s Big Plans for Telangana
According to recent reports, BYD is in talks with the Telangana government to set up its first Indian EV factory near Hyderabad. The state government has already suggested three locations, and BYD’s team is currently reviewing them before making a final decision.
If the deal is finalized, the company will sign an agreement with Telangana officials soon. This project will not only bring a huge investment into the state but will also create thousands of jobs and attract smaller companies that make EV parts.
Why Is BYD Setting Up a Factory in India?
Although BYD has been selling EVs in India for a while, it does not yet have a manufacturing plant here. Currently, the company imports cars from China, which leads to high import taxes and expensive prices. A local factory will reduce costs, making BYD’s EVs more affordable and increasing its market share in India.
The company had earlier tried to invest ₹8,200 crore in Telangana in partnership with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) in 2023. However, the Indian government rejected the proposal due to concerns over Chinese investments. Now, with some policy changes, BYD is ready to move forward with its plans again.
BYD’s Partnership with Olectra Greentech
BYD already has a technical partnership with Olectra Greentech, a subsidiary of MEIL, which has been supplying electric buses in Hyderabad for years. Olectra builds these buses using BYD’s technology and supplies them across India. This existing connection with Telangana may have influenced BYD’s decision to set up its factory in the state.
Future Plans: Batteries and High-Speed Charging
BYD is not just focusing on building cars—it also wants to set up a 20-gigawatt battery production plant in India. Over the next five to seven years, it aims to produce up to 600,000 EVs every year.
The company is also working on new fast-charging technology. It has developed a 1 MW flash charger that can fully charge an EV in just 5-8 minutes, giving it a driving range of up to 400 km! This innovation could be a game-changer for the EV industry.
BYD vs. Tesla: The Race for EV Supremacy
BYD recently overtook Tesla in global revenue, earning around $107 billion (₹9.20 trillion), compared to Tesla’s $97.7 billion (₹8.40 trillion). While Tesla is facing slow sales in China and Europe, BYD is expanding aggressively with new factories and technology.
